INTIMATE HEALTH

Vaginal dryness and menopause

A place to discuss dryness, discomfort and menopausal changes, and find care suited to your health.

Several possible causes

Menopausal hormonal changes may affect vulvovaginal tissues, but dryness can also occur while breastfeeding, during certain treatments or because of irritants. Pain and burning may also relate to infection or skin conditions. Describing when symptoms started and what makes them worse helps the consultation.

What is assessed

The professional asks about urinary symptoms, pain during sex, bleeding, previous treatment and relevant history. Examination and tests are proposed as needed and explained beforehand. Unexpected bleeding, a lesion or persistent symptoms should not simply be attributed to age.

Treatment follows the diagnosis

Options may include vaginal moisturisers, suitable lubricants and reducing irritants. When hormonal changes are involved, the professional considers local medical treatment or other options according to history and preferences. Not everyone needs the same approach or should receive hormones. A history of hormone-sensitive cancer requires particularly careful individual decisions.

Assessing the role of laser

Vaginal laser is a technique you can ask about. For menopausal symptoms, its benefit has not been conclusively established and it is not considered a routine treatment option. The consultation reviews suitable alternatives for your case. Read more about vaginal laser.

Care beyond aesthetics

You can consult without wanting any procedure. Intimate health is part of general gynaecology. The Askabide network also provides information on menopause, gynaecology and pelvic-floor health through its specialist sites, linked in the Askabide network.
